TAIKO COURSE & PERFORMANCE PROJECT
IN GLASGOW
www.taiko.co.uk
Are you fit, energetic, rhythmic &
a natural performer?
Join our performance project & learn to play the taiko drums at a 10-week course leading to a performance as part of a professional production.
Experience in percussion, music, dance or martial arts is an advantage, but it is not a prerequisite – we teach you all of the skills that you will need. But we do require that all of the participants have a good sense of rhythm, be physically fit, and enjoy performing on a stage.
The taiko course & performance project is run by the Mugen Taiko Dojo, the first and only teaching centre dedicated to the art and discipline of Taiko drumming in the UK.
(see: http://www.taiko.co.uk/dojo/index.html)
Taiko drumming is an energetic, physical and highly choreographed art form which has thrilled audiences worldwide. Originally from Japan, this traditional folk art is developing & spreading as a modern European art-form
The performers and teachers with the Dojo are the UK’s leading players in this art-form, all touring players with Mugenkyo Taiko Drummers. (see: http://www.taiko.co.uk/mugenkyo/index.htm)
THE TAIKO COURSE
The course is 10 sessions long, and will take the participants from the basics of taiko: the stance and the bachi drumstick grip, through to learning a performance piece. The course is suitable for both beginners as well as for experienced drummers & percussionists. We are running two courses this autumn, in Glasgow and in Edinburgh. The course fee is £120.

The 10th & final session for each course will be held at the Mugen Taiko Dojo in South Lanarkshire on Thursday 11 November, 7-10pm, which will include a final dress rehearsal for the performance. Lift-sharing will be arranged for those without transport.
THE PERFORMANCE
The performance itself will take place at the Howden Park Theatre in Livingston on Friday 12 November, 7:30pm, and will be part of our “Taiko Drumfest” concert.
TO APPLY
To apply for the project, please fill in the form & send it to us by post or email to the address below. The places will be on a first come, first served basis & places can only be held with a deposit of £30. The remainder of the course fee to be paid by Friday 3rd September.
AFTER THE COURSE
If you would like to carry on playing and performing Taiko after the course, there may be a further opportunity to do so, by joining one of our regular training groups based at the Dojo. Please let us know if you’d like to be considered, as the course, the final rehearsal & the performance would then serve as an audition process for joining us at the Dojo. Many of our current players, & even our full-time professional players have started their path in taiko drumming with a course such as this one – as it provides the opportunity to learn the basics, and a starting point for joining one of our performing groups.
