Figures released by the Embassy of Japan reveal that the intake in UK JET participants rose by 50% in 2010 compared to the previous year. In total 193 British ALTs and CIRs were recruited to the programme this year. (Read more of the Embassy of Japan's article here).
A seperate article in the Japan Times indicates that this is the first increase in UK participant numbers in nine years. In 2009, there were 390 British JETs participating on the programme, accounting for 9% of the total. This compares to 20% of the total a decade earlier. (Read more of the Japan Times Article here).
The total number of participants from all countries peaked in 2002, with 6,273 JETs. The latest figures for 2009 indicate that participant numbers had fallen back to 4,436.
