Chapter Roundup: London

Hello JETAA London members!

The London chapter has been hard at work throughout 2016 and the first part of 2017 to arrange a wide variety of events for members, ranging from social meetups to volunteer opportunities.

Last year saw us relaunch our social events series with several successful pub nights and karaoke sessions as well as great events to send off departing JETs and welcome home returning ones.

In 2017, we wasted no time getting started with hosting events, and even launched a brand new activity: the London Chapter Book Club, which we are really excited about.

Unlike more traditional book clubs, we don't require our members to read the same books. Instead we choose a theme, within which everyone presents a book they have read. In this way we all discover titles we may not have heard of before.

Our first book club theme was “your favourite book” so we had a very interesting range of titles, including Across the Nightingale Floor by Gillian Rubinstein, Nella Last's War: The Second World War Diaries of ‘Housewife 49’ edited by Richard Broad and Suzie Fleming, P.S. I Love You by Cecelia Ahern, The 4-Hour Workweek by Timothy Ferriss, and Ready Player One by Ernest Cline.

The second book club meeting in March focused on crime and thriller books.

Our next session is on 23 April. Please bring your favourite travel-themed book to discuss with the group.

Over the next few months we have even more exciting events planned for JET alumni living in or visiting London, including a hanami picnic on 29th April, a Eurovision-themed karaoke event in May and a Q&A session for soon-to-depart JETs. There is always something exciting going on for JETAA members in London.

We try to arrange at least one social event per month at pubs and cafes around London, but we’d love to hear from you about what kind of events you’d like us to organise. Keep an eye on your emails and our Facebook page for details of our upcoming karaoke nights and hanami parties.

If you have any ideas about events, please feel free to get in touch at londonchair@jetaa.org.uk.

Best regards,

Margaret
