Message from the Japanese Ambassador to the UK
As the world gets ever smaller, effective communication across international borders is increasingly important. Former JET Programme participants, having acquired a deep level of cultural sensitivity and understanding, are ideally placed to play a positive role in this regard. The JET Alumni community therefore functions as an indispensable bridge between the UK and Japan, and JETAA provides a vital service by maintaining and nurturing that link through its members.
At present there are over 10,000 British former JETs all over the world sharing their experience of Japan under their own initiative and in cooperation with JETAA. This situation looks set to persist as the JET Alumni community continues to expand throughout the world.
Japan-UK partnership has never been as close or as successful as it is today. 1,000 Japanese companies are operating throughout the UK, having directly created over 140,000 jobs. Meanwhile, in academia UK-Japanese co-authored research is cited 2.5 times more than the world average, and in sport Japan is preparing to host two major international events in the form of the 2019 Rugby World Cup and the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics. Now more than ever is the time for former JETs to make the most of the experiences they gained through the programme and to engage in productive networking with Japanese people and businesses.
JETAA provides the perfect vehicle for former JETs to keep their interest in the Japanese language and culture alive even years after returning home and to share what they have learned within their communities here in the UK.
