Annelise Wilp

We are delighted to feature Annelise Wilp for this week’s Senpai Spotlight! Her journey highlights how the unique experiences of a JET ALT can shape a lasting career in higher education, while reminding us of the magical moments that make the programme so unforgettable.

From a "mini Hogwarts" in Fukushima to helping university students navigate their academic goals, Annelise's story is full of heart and great advice. Read her spotlight below!

Placement: Saitama Prefecture (2018–2020)

Role: High School ALT

A Magical Memory: British Hills & English Cloaks "Every year, our first-year Gaigo (Advanced Foreign Language Students) students traveled to British Hills in Fukushima to practice and perform a play entirely in English. Five ALTs joined to facilitate the camp at what can only be described as a mini Hogwarts—we even got to wear cloaks! It was an incredible memory for both the students and the teachers, and seeing the massive boost in the students’ confidence in speaking English was deeply rewarding.

Transitioning into Higher Education "My time teaching in Japan made me realize I wanted to dedicate my career to education. Today, I work as an Academic Advisor for an online university. However, the path wasn't immediate; it took a few years after JET to gain the necessary advising experience, and some of those transitional roles were challenging. But every step was worth it to get to where I am now.

Words of Wisdom

To Current JETs: Enjoy your experience while you can and try not to stress too much about the future. When you return home, you will absolutely yearn for Japan and look for any excuse to talk about it! Soak it all in right now.

To Recent Alumni: Be patient with the job hunt and the transition process. It takes time to settle into your post-JET career. Most importantly, lean on your fellow JET community—we have all been exactly where you are, and we are here to support you on this journey.

Annelise's "mini Hogwarts" trip is a perfect example of the unexpected adventures JET throws our way.
