Bethany Linder
Bethany Linder was a JET in Tokyo from 2016-2017. During her time on the JET programme I had so many amazing experiences which left me with a lifelong interest in Japan. We asked her a little about how JET impacted her and what’s she’s done since - take a look!
When I think back over some of my most memorable moments, these came to mind:
- Harvesting rice using traditional techniques on a school trip to Niigata
- Taking my JHS students watch sumo wrestlers training at a local sumo stable! Though, I'll admit, it was actually a little scary seeing sumo wrestling from only a couple of metres away!
- Dancing in the Shibuya Ohara Matsuri parade with some of my fellow JETs
To the incoming JETs, I wish you all the best! Make sure to get stuck in with as many activities as you can during your time in Japan, because it will absolutely fly by!
I'm now back in the UK working as a dementia researcher at Oxford University. Next March I'll be travelling to Japan to do a research project about using technology to support older people and people affected by dementia as part of the Churchill Fellowship Programme. I'll be creating a written report and a documentary about technology pioneered in Japan, such as robot companions that can support socially isolated older people and wearables that can help healthcare workers lift elderly patients safely in hospital.
If you're involved in technology and/or dementia research in Japan, or if you'd just like to find out more about the project, please get in touch!
The documentary will be released here:
And the written report will be available on my Churchill Fellow profile:
