Brooke Johnston

Brooke Johnston was an ALT in Mizuho (now called Kyotamba), a town of about 5,000 people in Kyoto prefecture, from 2003-2006. She taught in a junior high/middle school and four elementary/primary schools.

Before joining JET, I had intended to take a year out after university to go to Japan and then return to the US to attend law school. I ended up staying three years with JET and developing an interest in communications during that time. That shift was definitely inspired by teaching and living in a country where I did not speak the language! I also edited the Kyoto JET Journal (called the 'Gambatte Times') and won the 14th Annual JET Programme Essay Contest while in Japan, so I was able to put my writing skills to good use. All of this led to me moving straight to London after JET to pursue a master's degree in communications. I have been in the UK ever since working in PR agencies and later in law firms, where I specialise in PR, internal comms, social media and reputation management.

My time on JET is full of wonderful memories but a couple of them really stand out. First, the festivals. I loved getting involved in my town's local festivals and helping to carry 'mikoshi' through the streets. The barbecues and parties afterwards were great for nursing a sore shoulder! Second, my parents were able to visit me while I was in Japan and that trip was my father's first time abroad. Seeing him experience Kyoto, a sumo tournament, the food and the culture was magical.

My advice to new JETs is jump in head first. Really immerse yourself in life in Japan, and never underestimate the power of enthusiasm and a smile when teaching children. For recent alumni, nurture the network of JETs you met while in Japan. Everyone scatters all over the world when they leave, and those friendships and connections have a way of enduring and inspiring for years after.
