Robert Atwell

Robert Atwell (2013-2015) was an ALT working at two public high schools in Kyotanabe, a town in Kyoto Prefecture, between 2013 and 2015. It was an ideal location for a Kansai JET, just 25 minutes into Kyoto and about an hour to Osaka. Some of his happiest memories in Japan were long evenings spent sitting with friends on the banks of the Kamo River in Kyoto.

His story:

Getting to know my Japanese colleagues - several of whom I am still in touch with 10 years later - was a major highlight. Every time I go back to Japan or they visit me in South Africa or the UK we make sure to set up several 'nomu-nication' (drinking) sessions.

I remember a long trip I did catching only local trains between Osaka and Nagasaki with my then girlfriend (now wife!). We didn't plan too far in advance and it was great just rocking up in new towns all along the way and finding out what life was like.

Since leaving JET I've moved into a career in the intelligence, investigations and due diligence space. I currently spend my days investigating fraud and related issues, primarily in the sports sector. Having spent time in Japan helped me carve out a niche as having some level of regional expertise by having demonstrable in-country experience.

In terms of advice for current or returning JETs, I strongly recommend doing your best to either learn at least some Japanese and/or try to find ways to maintain your Japanese language skills after you return. Aside from the personal fulfillment you may gain from learning another language, such skills are prized in most careers and will help with the post-JET job search.
